About the writing
There is something about humaning that confounds modern humans. We have lost touch with ourselves, so we have lost touch with each other. You can read countless examples in the news where blame is assigned freely for injustices both real and imagined. You can see it on social media as people forget they are commenting to their fellow humans and that we are all in this one world together. You can feel it when you walk down the aisle at the grocery store past your neighbors and see only strangers.
This blog is an exploration of all the aspects of being human and the connections between those seemingly disparate elements which weave together to create the vast and many-patterned fabric of The Human Experience. The unfolding of a human being is more complex than the folding of a fitted sheet. My goal is to encourage people to see and feel their own humanity, and through that lens to see and feel the humanity of others. I want to remind people of our shared humanity. I want to make the world a better place.

I am me.
I have been practicing Mo Duk Pai kung fu since 2005, and teaching 2 or 3 classes a week since 2005. I earned my a black belt in 2019 and I’m planning to get a dragon tattoo to commemorate that achievement. I identify strongly with dragons and since my black belt represents my ability to be fully myself in my martial expression, it feels like the perfect visual representation. I have also trained in Shanti System Taiji/Qigong since about 2012, and I was certified as a Level 1 instructor in 2021. Martial arts is a significant part of my life. It informs and is informed by all the other areas of my existence.
I work to use my martial arts to help people heal themselves so we can all work together to heal the world. I especially want to empower women, girls, femm humans, non-binary people, trans folks, and other often overlooked or oppressed humans to inhabit their body as totally their own domain. I engage in anti-racist and other anti-oppression efforts to create and maintain safer spaces for all flavors of folks to train and exist safely.
I have worked in the accounting industry since 2003. I worked for the IRS, conducting tax audits and fraud investigations until I got bureaucracied-out. I “retired” from public service in 2017 and opened my own anti-fraud firm with a little tax practice on the side. I want to use my work to stand in the way of injustice. I want to grow equity in the places where capitalism and colonialism currently have deep, well-established roots. I want to inject my very white, very male, and historically conservative industry with a serum of broader empathy and greater consideration for people other than the 5 wealth-hoarding people who reap the most benefit from our current societal systems.
Outside work and martial arts I like to pick up heavy things and put them down, then pick them up and put them down, again and again. I like to run fast and jump high, climb stuff and balance on things. I love to dance. I love to move my body and sweat. Usually in long-sleeves because I get cold easily.
I write a weekly blog called OnHumaning (you may have noticed). Each week I pick a topic and explore that particular facet in the gem of being human. I hope to spread healing and liberation as far as my reach extends. I hope to keep building my readership to expand that reach.
I also love to laugh and sing and play games. Dad jokes are my favorite. I like to support my community and friends in their endeavors and see them thrive. I like to eat a lot of leaves - kale is my favorite leaf. Chard is my other favorite. I have a lot of favorites.
I believe it's not too late for us to get our collective shit together and remake our world into a place that takes care of every person everywhere. And I know we don't have any time to waste. I'm not sure if we'll make it in time, but I think it's worth making the effort all the same.
